Olha, eu sigo esse procedimento:

# cvsup
# make buildworld
# make kernel
# shutdown now
# mount -a -t ufs
# cd /usr/src
# mergemaster -p
# make installworld
# mergemaster -Pi
# reboot

Isso funciona perfeitamente aqui, acho que a desvantagem de se usar o
make world, eh que vc vai instalar os binarios do base system por cima
dos outros que podem estar em uso. Isso pode corromper algum binario.

O processo mais demorado, que é o buildworld e o kernel, vc faz com a
máquina "em pé´", só deixa o installworld para rodar em modo single.
